Oscar has Tom and Mel beat by a mile. Because along with that star power he can, you know, act. But, yeah, I get what you're saying.

Look, Joey, I'm not trying to start that discussion.

presence can go a long way...i don't feel cruise is a great actor, but his presence is undeniable...plus he seems to find himself in mostly interesting roles

Yes, thank you. You'd have to be a goddamn fool to argue against the screen presence and charisma of Cruise. Especially young Cruise, like A Few Good Men or Top Gun.

funny, i've only seen bits and pieces of a few good men and have never seen top gun (no plans to either)

mostly people just rag on him because of the scientology thing

100% correct. If Cruise and Gibson weren't regarded as crazy people, they would be widely considered two of our greatest living actors.

No one here is doing that, though. Actually, every time this argument comes up more people than not agree with this exact point.

I'm probably splitting hairs, but again, I don't think they're two of our greatest living actors. Mel never was. Tom showed flashes. But they were/are two of our greatest and brightest living stars.

Mel is a genuine asshole of the first degree. And he's managed to squander damn near all of the charisma he once had. But before all that he was an undeniable star. Tom's still going pretty strong outside of Scientology. And he's even turned in genuinely moving and exceptional performances on occasion.

But in no way am I comfortable calling either of those guys "greatest living actors." Even in their prime. Stars? yes. Actors? no.

Come on, man - just look at Gibson's tearful breakdown in the climax of Signs. Or his suicide attempt in Lethal Weapon. Or his entire performance in The Beaver (which is a terrible movie, but he is unbelievable in it). I don't know how you could say the guy can't act.

He's not terrible like say... Jessica Alba or Paul Walker. He's not that bad. He kinda knows what he's doing. But he's not a good actor. He certainly isn't a great actor. He's all surface. Hamfisted and obvious. Few competent actors play an emotion like he plays an emotion. Oh my character is crazy. I can play crazy. Oh my character is happy. I can play happy. NO, NO YOU CAN'T MEL. THAT'S NOT HOW IT WORKS. YOU CAN'T PLAY CRAZY.

Gross.
