I'd like this to be limited to the bands that dominated the grunge discussion of the era, and bands whose discographies we are all largely familiar with. Even if we can't come up with a musical definition to satisfy the pedants, when people talked about grunge during this period this is what they meant.
Which is why I said...

Or even... and god help me for even saying this because it makes me want to vomit but... Hole? I mean I detest Courtney Love. But Live Through This is probably a pretty significant "grunge" record released in the appropriate time frame. God, I hate that I just posted that.
If nothing else, we should expand this to include records released in 1989. Bleach, Temple of the Dog, Green River, the Mother Love Bone stuff... all of that should really be included in a "best of" grunge tournament.
none of those bands are as big as the "big 6"
I'd argue that Sweet Oblivion and Live Through This were both pretty big/important/widely known grunge albums. All's I'm saying is this feels a bit thin. But maybe Stip is right and "most people" aren't familiar with those records. So be it. I just hope this isn't an instance of Stip really meaning "albums I'm familiar with."

the screaming trees/mark lanegan is my third favorite artist of all time. I prefer sweet oblivion to every record by nirvana, soundgarden, AiC, STP, and the Pumpkins. this has nothing to do w my preferences

Everyone knows Siamese Dream and Melancholy are grungy. Just accept that fact so we can move on.

Just leave out The Aeroplane Flies High. Mellon Collie songs make up around a 3rd of it anyway. We could also have a play in round for Screaming Trees, Hole, MLB etc? Provided there's space.

Bush is like the king of the ripoffs. I have a couple of their albums and have seen them live myself. But to me they always felt like what came after.
Hole is something else. LA punk band from the 80s. Singer marries Cobain, makes one classic album, released ten days after his death.

Silverchair's popularity was lost on me even back then. Couldn't stand them.

I thought of Live as grungy back in the day. Throwing Copper is probably grunge. edit: In a Pearl Jam kind of way.
