Low Desert.....In Charelston, at my first PJ show, Ed talked about having the music for Present Tense from Mike but not being able to come up with lyrics, then he got inspired by Pete Townsend's initials. PT.

The base line from Low Desert is the same as Neil Young's Last Dance. LD. The whole "recording it live" and the connection to Neil's Time Fades Away being live always made me wonder if that is where Stipe got inspired for the lyrics/title.

Yeah, my feeling is that you only feel that way, Rangi, because it's universally loved. Undertow is kind of a given. People don't talk about it as much because it speaks for itself.

what? his departure was a known inflection point for the band, so much so that they almost seriously broke up after he decided to leave. up is the first album that they didn't have his influence or get pushed in a direction by him, and the result is an album that most people, other than die hards, find hard to digest.

Im listening Reveal for the first time ever, for some reason i hated the album when it came out. I liked Imitation Of Life enough, but hated the video of All The Way To Reno, and i was so tired of the band i guess i wasnt in the mood for more music.

Weirdly enough, a few years go by and they release the In Time compilation, and im super fucking into REM again, loving Around The Sun, seeing them live, getting into b sides....but never never Reveal.

So far im not liking Reveal at all.

i've posted this before, but for me reveal is a "feel" album, if that makes sense (it has to be summer, it has to be sunny and hot out, and it has to be mid-day/afternoon for me to get into the mood to listen to it).

maybe yes...i think its mostly boring... Imitation Of Life is great, Ill Take The Rain is great and thats about it it seems.

Something about the glossy, summer-y production style of Reveal has always rubbed me the wrong way. It feels heavy and draining to me, like I'm wading through an endless desert. I can handle it in short doses but as a full album experience it's kind of exhausting.

That said, I really like about half of that record. I think the highlights are great. But there's also a bunch of stuff on there that just plain doesn't work for me.

I thought it was mainly boring and uninspired.

i really, really, really hate all the way to reno, and i'm not a fan of imitation of life either

I like Imitation of Life. But the only song on the record that I love, the only one I have to keep is I'll Take the Rain.

i've always like i've been high. but you're right, i'll take the rain is fantastic.

Right now having to listen to Reveal via YouTube as I've stashed that somewhere I can't find....

"Imitation of Life" is probably my favorite REM single

Not a big fan of the song, but it's nice to hear Michael sing again
