Yea, was reading an interview about this just a couple days ago -- maybe on Vulture? -- and Thornton says that Harvey Weinstein has been continually supportive of a release, and that it's entirely Lanois's fault for not signing off the music rights.

Fingers crossed. I still haven't seen the theatrical cut because I figured... what's the point? I'd love to see Billy's original vision.

But like that he allows for silence, doesn't have any musical cues, and generally gets the gist of how the lush dialogue could be delivered in such a way that it sounds somewhat natural.
