One thing that really irks me about the Offspring song is that it really feels like they're trying to pull a fast one on people. There are a bunch of concrete musical elements that point to it being a very conscious rewrite of "All the Small Things," from the structure of the opening I IV V riff and how it's arranged to the palm muted verses, the drum fill at the end of the first verse being nearly identical on both songs, the way the chorus opens up, the vocalizations ("ba ba ba"s instead of "na na na"s), the bridge with the rolling drums and the string crescendo... even the lyrics. Nothing that is 1:1 enough to be called plagiarism, but enough small details that it just feels extremely derivative. I can imagine them in lab coats with charts and guitars trying to figure out how to write a just different enough copy of that song.

They've pulled the same shit before. "Days Go By" is so much a rewrite of the Foo Fighters "Times LIke These" that they had to change the vocal melody because people were talking. Another song of theirs called "Rise and Fall" is a carbon copy of Green Day's "American Idiot". Another one has a chorus that sounds just like My Chemical Romance's "Helena"

I listened to the new Bon Jovi album today. Most of the songs seemed like the kind of music you hear in a fixer upper show on HGTV when the family gets a fresh start in their updated home. It’s the best Jon can do now. I’m not mad at him for doing it.

These new offerings, along with stuff like that Motley Crue single, really highlight how fucking great Dark Matter actually is from a group so long in the tooth.

Just listened to the first 52 seconds of that Offspring song. It is NOT fine. It is unfine. That melody can go to hell.

Also, singing like you're a little kid is my least favourite style of singing. Unless you're actually a child, then it can be kind of cute.

It's driving me crazy what that Offspring album cover is reminding me of -- my kneejerk reaction is that it's Metallica's Ride the Lightning but I don't think it is, I want to say it is some movie poster but I can't place it. Either way, I agree that the song is abysmal. What a bunch of clowns these guys became.

I also agree that something in the pop/bro country genre is likely to be worse -- not research that I will be doing myself.
