For most bands from the 90's to late-2000's a vinyl pressing was an afterthought. Except for purist like Jack White.
Lightning bolt is of course mastered separately for vinyl which was long awaited from the band. As for the earlier albums I find that Ten through Riot Act all sound great and I enjoy the dynamic range better than a digital format.

While I like the albums S/T and Backspacer they are mere collectables from a vinyl-standpoint.

It's posturing. Ed looking hardcore whilst his bank balance grows. It would have been fascinating to see PJ steadily grow and how/if Ed was different.

It would surprise me that PJ vinyl would sound particularly well when their CD's aren't nowhere near that format's potential. PJ isn't very good at evaluating what sounds good.

They hired him, not the other way around. And frankly they're a perfect fit at this point. Maybe their latest records are better of far away from audiophile sound quality.

Maybe you're right. It's like when they did the remix of Ten. I remember the band talking about the original mix, saying they added all the effects and reverb to cover up shoddy mistakes and imperfections in the original mix. Maybe they're still doing the same thing now, but just with shitty mixing and sound quality.

Vinyl is supposed to have a separate, totally different mastering process from the CD version which is why a lot people prefer vinyl in the first place. Pearl Jam takes the cheap way out and just cuts the vinyl from the CD master. So if the CD sounds like shit, so does the vinyl. Some people are fooled, though. A lot of turntable owners (like myself) have a decent quality amp and speaker setup for their records, whereas they'll probably play the CD in the car or on a midi system or MP3 player. Naturally the vinyl will sound better due to the quality of the equipment.

I take it all back! Problem solved: tracking force was way less than it should have been. I think the dial got moved accidentally when I moved the turntable recently. It was at 1.2 grams and it should have been at 1.8. Now everything sounds like it's dipped in sweet audio nectar, including Pearl Jam!

My point was that if one cares about the quality of the audio they will have the CD mastered, and mixed even before that, accordingly to begin with. I'm not sure the mastering for the CD can be used for vinyl as-is. If I'm not wrong vinyl requires some specific mastering in the extremes of the frequency spectrum because of the format's limitations.

I was thinking the same thing while listening to LB. Reverb is part of the mixing process btw, i guess they had performances in mind there.
