I found it dull, trite, riddled with cliches, and stylistically irritating. I spent most of the running time rolling my eyes. Especially through that dumb as hell final act.
But aren't you a fan of Event Horizon?
Oh yeah, big fan. But the direction, visuals, tone, and ideas are very different. And it could be argued that Sunshine's final act is a straight rip-off of Event Horizon's final act.
They are different. Sunshine's are better. Of course we each like one and dislike the other and of course we're on opposite sides of that coin. That's in keeping. I vastly prefer the visuals, tone and ideas of Sunshine.

And "ripoffs" don't much bother me. Nothing new under the sun and all that. It's much more about which is better/more effective. And again, the medal goes to Sunshine. From what I remember. But I don't really remember either very strongly. It's been years since I've seen those films, much longer for EH.
Our disagreement could not be more violent or extreme here. But, like you said, in keeping and all.

I saw that movie on opening weekend in 1997, around the pinnacle of my movie snobdom, and I remember being so frustrated with it. There was nothing about the movie that I enjoyed. At the time, I came away thinking it was the worst budgeted sci-fi film I'd ever seen. I was angry. I had a headache. And I felt awful. That movie made me physically ill. The acting alone is abominable. Made me want to punch a wall any time an actor opened their mouth in that movie.

Having said that, I haven't seen the movie since. Maybe it would be valuable to revisit the thing. I don't know.

The first time I saw it years ago, I didn't like it either. I thought it was empty, derivative sci-fi. But I rewatched it earlier this year and instantly fell in love. It's gory, crazy as hell, atmospheric, unsettling, efficient, and full of visual creativity. You should give it a second look.

I never would have lumped Sunshine in with these two movies, but then they dropped that crappy ending on me. So...

Event Horizon--->Pandorum--->Sunshine

The only thing unsettling about it was the acting. And Gory is rarely a positive in my book. But, yeah, I'll give it another go one of these days.

Haha I think you might remember the acting being worse than it actually is. The movie actually has a pretty good cast.

Are you not a horror fan? If not, that might play a role in our disagreement. I'm all about dat gory horror, and this is basically Hellraiser in space. I love Hellraiser and I love space movies, so of course I love Event Horizon.
