I would hope not, I'm all for ruling a song out of contention once one version has been picked.

Hang on, I just looked at the rules: can we ditch the Unplugged and live stipulations? In fact, can't we simply just run with any eight songs from the band's studio output and let things work themselves out naturally? I don't have any problem with someone stacking their team with Bleach songs if that's what they're into, for instance.
That's more like it...

I'm fine with whatever rules. I just set it up based on some of the chatter from the Nirvana thread.

So how's this...If a song is taken, you can't reuse it. Person A takes Come As You Are Unplugged, then Come As You Are is now not an option for anyone.

I don't care about the unplugged rule either, or really the live rule, so I'm fine with a take whatever the hell 8 songs you want approach.

Also, what about the start time? Is tonight good, or do we need to iron out rules?

In general, there are some parameters with the tournaments. (See the R.E.M. tournament, for example.) I like having some rules because it forces you to choose and choose carefully -- and you don't always end up with your dream team because people snag your top picks. That forces you to reconsider everything in context of what you're left with. In a pick-whatever-you-want tournament, someone can just put together their dream lineup out of live songs and there ya go. No real reason to have a tournament at that point -- people can just list their 8 favorite songs and be done with it. So I'm in favor of having some sort of rules, just because it adds an element of intrigue and challenge. But I'll go with whatever people want. And, really, Darth if you're running the tournament, YOU get to make the rules and f**k what any of us think.

Updated rules on page 1. How's this? I kept the live stipulation, but changed to any live song from an official release, and added a wild card.

Let me know what y'all think. Also once we get going, I don't know how well I'll be able to keep up with stuff. If dct or someone else wants to mod, that's perfectly cool with me. I just wanted to get this thing going :)

Song selection:

* Each player drafts 8 songs.
* You must take one song from each of the studio albums (Bleach, Nevermind, & In Utero)
* You must take one song from Incesticide
* You must take one live song from an official live release (box sets, unplugged, muddy banks, etc...)
* You must take one Demo / Outtake / B-side (not on Incesticide)
* You must take two Wild Cards (any Nirvana song you want)
* You cannot repeat songs (studio Come As You Are, and Unplugged Come As You Are)
* You cannot use a song that has been picked (if I choose a live version of that song, you can't choose the studio version)

So like songs on the With the Lights Out set that are NOT on Insecticide or demos of studio songs would count as the non Insecticide B side, yes?

Insecticide B side is the new Nirvana tribute band in Aberdeen, Washington.

I do see potential problems with the 'live song' rule, but evs...

Also, looks like I'll be going camping this wknd, so someone can either take my place or I could pm my draft board to someone who isn't participating. Either way, I'll be off the grid from 4/18 to 4/20... sorry, team

We might have to stipulate that you can only take one song from each studio album/Inecesticide. Otherwise, with wild cards, someone could pick two or three songs from In Utero or Bleach or NVM, which wouldn't leave enough songs for everyone to have a pick from those albums.

So this didn't start at midnight, no worries, sounds like we have to hammer out rules. Really, I don't care much. We can tone down the rules and just say something like:

* One song from each studio album, and only one song.

* Wild cards are last. Could be b-sides/demos/live tracks (this would get rid of the Insecticide rule, and the live rule, as they'd all just be wild cards).

So with 12 teams, one song only from each album, that means everyone should get one song from each right? I forget how many songs are on each album.

Insecticide would be eligible for more than one song taken, b/c I'm pretty sure there are like 14 songs on it.

I have a bunch of calls at work today, so I don't know if I'm gonna be able to check in a lot today. Like I said, I just wanted to get this started, hence the thread. From here though, I'm not sure if I can give this thread the attention it demands.

Here is a toned down / edited version of the rules. Does this work?

* Each player drafts 8 songs.
* You must take one song and only one song from each of the studio albums (Bleach, Nevermind, & In Utero)
* Remaining songs are Wild Cards (any Nirvana song you want - studio or live - that is not on Bleach, Nevermind, or In Utero)
* You cannot repeat songs (studio Come As You Are, and Unplugged Come As You Are)
* You cannot use a song that has been picked (if I choose a live version of that song, you can't choose the studio version)

So really, this is 3 songs from the studio albums, and essentially 5 wild cards. Does that sound right? The wild cards are the demos, Insecticide, b-sides, and live tracks.
