The score is brilliant. Might be Cliff Martinez's best work to date.

My best friend watched this with his lady last night. He texted me when it was over. Man they did NOT like this movie.
"My review of Neon Demon.."
"This movie is SO FUCKED UP!!!!!"
"Obvious and on the nose? It was very pretty, but disgusting and up its own ass"
"[She] thought it was up its own ass, I just think it's really fucking gross and disturbing."
I told him what I thought of the film and he said,
"Okay... maybe the shock value was too intense for us the first time through? maybe it's a movie that deserves a rewatch to pick up on more."
I said, yeah, maybe. Or maybe you guys just don't like the movie.

I finally saw this one earlier this week. Modeling is a beautiful, vapid endeavor. This is a beautiful, vapid film. (This is not a positive review).

Why do you think it's vapid?

I don't think it's exploring any new ideas. What is it about? Valuing beauty is superficial? Models are jealous of one another? The dialogue is occasionally so on-the-nose that it's embarrassing.
And then of course there's some ultra-violence because Refn's gotta Refn.

I mean, if you take it completely at face value, I guess. But I don't think it's about modeling at all. Like all Refn films, it's autobiography. It's about Drive and his relationship to Hollywood.
