that briefest of pauses before the music kicks back in after the first chorus is one of my favorite moments on the album

“Turns out it was more like hit and run” is the moment this song goes from good to great. Also, Stone’s acoustic playing during “Let us not fade” is just pure Pearl Jam.

This might be the most 90s PJ sounding song on the record.

Setting Sun is my favorite song in decades, but I still don't think it can compete with a top 7 song like Brain of J

Based upon intent Setting Sun is far superior.
Based upon performance Brain is a Slight winner
Based upon song writing as a craft it's probably a tie
Lyrically-speaking I say Setting Sun

i think in the end there is more emotional resonance to setting sun and that wins the day

I think it's safe to say that no one expected a song like this at this point in their career. There was no way to contextualize such an expectation.

Man, I can’t get over how good that is! When was the last time Eddie’s voice was so on point at the end of a show?

I still like this song, but it's a crime that it doesn't end on the same percussion that starts it.

“Make the ending more like River Cross” is not a complaint I had on my bingo card.

it's actually that opening guitar riff that is maybe my favorite part of the song, but I don't know how they'd circle back to either one
But when they come back to the riff/drums after the first chorus...great stuff.

River Cross is so underrated
I also think ending on that percussion would be perfect

My opinion relates only to the song. Not its role as an album closer or position relative to River Cross.

you're right though, it should finish with those Let Me Sleep drums and they should fade out
