I own 121 Criterions.

Those are just my Criterions. My full movie collection is in the ballpark of 2000. I'm a collector and I love it.

Yeah, I try not to think about it. But to be fair, it's been accumulated over 14 years.

I used to have this same passion for watching film. Not sure when it stopped for me. But I do remember when it came back. It was when I saw Lars and the Real Girl. Since then I've really loved film again, though I've never been able to reignite the flame of those halcyon days. Birdman, though, has reminded me how good it can be.

Yet you claim to value subtlety and heart and soul.

Ha. I didn't find those in that movie, friend. But I can totally see why someone would be into it.

Different tastes and all that.... but for some reason I'm really bummed about this difference. That movie was literally revolutionary for me. It completely changed my jaded views of what film is and what it can and should be. I went through many years not giving a good goddamn about cinema at all. It's such a vile and bastardized "art form."
For a long time it meant nothing to me but cheesy, openly manipulative escapism. Then... Lars. God that movie was magical. It reminded me that film was valuable. That there were stories worth telling in that medium. Film has the potential to expand worldviews and to connect people. I would never have argued that without Lars. Movies -- the cinema was dead to me. It had zero value.
It's fine that people don't like the same things I like. Whatever. But this one feels personal. Which is absurd. But I hate that anyone could view Lars and the Real Girl as anything other than beautiful, heart-on-sleeve, honest, pure, non-manipulative, expert, visual storytelling.
Damn. The holidays get me all emotional. Ignore me.

I wish Dwayne Johnson never stopped using the moniker "The Rock". I mean...
Dwayne?

When is the threshold for referring to a movie as an "old movie" these days? '60s? '70s? '50s? Earlier? Later?

anything that feels socially uncomfortable now, for me.
it's not a movie, but my sister and i have been watching LA LAW on DVD and wow! that shit is OLD, I have trouble dealing with the 80s hair-dos, the wardrobes, the kind of male to female interactions - all of it is just completely dated.

I kinda feel like 90s movies are old, but 80s movies aren't. Maybe it's just because 80s are back in style these days.
But anything 70s or earlier is old.

I'd say anything pre-70s feels old to me when I watch it. But mary made a great point as well. So it's case to case. But fore sure pre-70s, for me.

I always considered it to be '50s and earlier. But obviously years are passing, and not long ago '60s movies started to seem to fit the moniker as well. And now '70s movies are creeping close to it. I definitely wouldn't call '80s or '90s movies old, though.
