So what does it say about Hollywood? It's a pretentious industry that you don't want to get involved in? That's not an original idea, it's a cliche.
This movie is trash that looks like art so it gets more credit than it deserves.

It's way more personal and complex than that. "Pretension" has nothing to do with it. Refn identifies himself in multiple characters (Fanning, the boyfriend, the photographer), and uses that to explore his own contradictions and conflicts, and criticize himself as much as anyone around him.

If my only comfort during a movie is "sure it's insufferable now, but I sure can't wait to read theories about all these metaphors later", that's not a good sign.

You're clutching at straws now. No one is saying you have to like it. Have you ever discussed a film before?

Argo's take on movies has been really weird lately. He's been getting more cynical and less thoughtful

There's nothing to discuss. It's all right there on the level. Or you can make up a bunch of metaphors and give the movie more heft than it actually has.

To be fair, I was never intelligent or articulate

This movie is really spectacular. Like, I feel like it's easily Refn's best. Is that weird? I mean, I haven't seen a few of his films yet. But of the ones I've seen, this is his best.
