How could anyone look at the films of Spielberg and have their mind go right to problematic gender politics? Is she even human?! Film discussion has become an artless hellscape in which petty, revisionist political point-making is more important than artistry or insight.

Geez, it feels more like a small aside in the middle of an acceptance speech (for a "women in film" event) rather than an attempt to accurately and thoroughly assess the totality of the man's filmography from a philosophical standpoint. It hardly merits headline status in the first place, let alone this kind of scrutiny. Yeah, she got the facts wrong, but her overall point is about exposure, opportunity and motivation for female filmmakers, not a diss on master Spielberg's speckless career.

I watched Fury Road last night. Tom Hardy's facial expressions are top notch in that movie.

I don't think she's talking about (or accusing him of) misogyny. From what I'm reading, she seems to be saying that she's been a lifelong Spielberg fan, but male directors tend to make male-centric stories, which in turn influences the next generation of filmmakers, and the cycle continues; if women want representation, they should be encouraged to get in the ring and make their movies too. An "if you can see it you can be it" kind of thing.

If you read the transcript of her speech and not just the headline-grabbing Spielberg "call-out", it's super clear that that's what she's saying.
