It's impossible to argue taste in movies really. You could look at success, ratings from reviewers, awards, cultural impact, Rotten Tomatoes, IMDB, etc. But I'm sure we would end up disagreeing at the end anyway.

Still The Shawshank Redemption is worthy of being top of the best movies ever at IMDB, even if I wouldn't have it at number one:

I'll go ahead and say it, I don't like "Shawshank."

Twaddle that never really earns its emotional core. Andy's character doesn't grow much in the film.

It's 90% overly saccharine BS, mixed with 10% random prison violence.

It's not surprising really, because you can go to any movie on IMDB and see the one star reviews, both Shawshank and Mulholland has a lot of them. Nearly every movie does.

Shawshank is about friendship, and about getting by rough times. It say that no matter what happens, you can fight your way through it. It's perfectly scripted, and wonderfully produced and acted. The other movie is also well produced, but its a dream, and often really makes no sense.

Yes

As Jorge pointed out, it's kinda weird that it has such a huge following. It's fairly bland and overt. Not the kind of movie you'd expect people to go on and on about.

Maybe it's just the fact that TNT and TBS show it 20 times a day.

Shawshank is fine enough, but I don't need to see it more than I already have. And I can't stand when people gush over it. It is a good movie, but it isn't some "greatest film of all time" like everyone makes it out to be.

I can usually tell when someone isn't really an avid movie watcher, even though they say "oh I LOVE movies, I'm a movie buff". How can I tell? I ask them their favorite movie and they say Shawshank Redemption.

It and the Green Mile is loved here in Northern Europe as well. TNT is a miniscule channel here, and we don't have TBS.

The only good thing to come of it was an increase in the use of the word "obtuse."

I could say the same about some other movies (perhaps some typical romantic comedy), but not that one. I've rated thousands of movies on imdb (and have seen thousands more), and it's among only 47 that I gave a 10.

I've already written above many of the good things about it.

I've only have 6 perfect 10s/A+s/perfect 5s

I would only give one of my three children a 10 rating.
