Early on for sure -- in '93 and '94, maybe into '95, it was played a number of times at various different points in the set. But throughout '95 and certainly by '96, its placement as a closer became pretty fixed. There have been rare exceptions since then, but I don't think (last time I saw them at Wrigley in '16, they played "YL" at what felt like the end of the show, but then they ended on "I've Got a Feeling").
i stopped being lazy and looked myself. of the 395 it's been played, it wasn't the last song 43 times. i assume it was 33 before this tour.

Naw, count ‘em. Every time they’ve closed with Porch or Leash they could’ve closed with Baba, Alive, I’ve Got a Feeling or Fuckin’ Up but they chose to close with Porch or Leash.

I wish Rockin in the Free World wasn't second. I mean it's a nice song and a good cover, but I don't like them ending on somebody else's song.

I love the songs that move along nicely for a while and then suddenly turn on a dime into some of the best music I’ve ever heard.
“I am the Resurrection” by The Stone Roses and “Telegraph Road” by Dire Straits are my favorite examples.

Black Crowes are also really good at that.

Setting Sun currently sits as my #3 PJ song behind Rats and I Got ID. The two live performances of the song I saw in Seattle last year were transcendent.

This was a fun thing to look up. Turns out I saw YL not close the show 3 times before 2024. Showbox & Key Arena 2002 (Don't Believe in Christmas) and Gorge 2005 (Baba). The following night in Vancouver (9/2/05) they flipped the order of Baba/YL to close out. Had forgotten all about these.
Thought Setting Sun as the show closer was absolutely perfect in the 3 shows I saw.

I actually think that it may be my favourite album closer in their catalogue. An absolute beaut.
