Oh he's certainly a powerful racist, misogynist and lunatic. He was a pretty okay actor once upon a time too. I still get a kick out of Conspiracy Theory and the first Lethal Weapon movie. I'm probably only one of a dozen or so people that liked Maverick, too.
maverick is a lot of fun

I'm confused by this Love and Mercy movie. They got young Brian Wilson played by a kid who they make up to look like Brian Wilson and then older Brian Wilson played by John Cusack who is made up to look like John Cusack.

I've only seen The Fifth Element. Which I liked well enough. Though, I haven't seen it in at least a decade.

A new piece I wrote for Film Colossus called
Kung Fury, Demonic Toys, and the Scourge of Ironic Detachment: Why We Should Stop Saying "So Bad It's Good":

I still marvel at how much well you misunderstand Kung Fury. Or rather, and less condescendingly, how differently we see it. That's better. Forget that first part.
I still marvel at how differently we see Kung Fury.
You know what's not surprising to me? That you liked MacGruber. I do like how you're able to find some value in it, though. That's pretty cool.
I also like: "It elevates the viewer above the film and denies that we could genuinely enjoy the film for its earnest, “bonkers” joy or admit that maybe it actually succeeds on its own, unconventional terms."
That's something I've certainly gone back and forth on.
But success might just be as subjective as the words "good" and "bad." And it feels a bit like you're talking down to people who genuinely think those movies are awful. I'm glad you like them. But you like terrible movies.

I'm not talking down to anyone. That would be antithetical to what I try to do when I write film criticism. I don't believe in attacking audiences. I explain (in quite a bit of detail) why I like the movies I mention and why I think "so bad it's good" is a dismissive misnomer. I don't like terrible movies. That's kind of what the whole piece is saying.

I have not seen it. Generally speaking, I'm not really drawn to martial arts movies.
