It baffles me how much more pushback Black Panther is getting than A Star Is Born or Vice. None really deserves a best picture nod, but those other two felt like fat, under-thought mimics of previous winners. All three movies had things they did well, but you’d have a hard time convincing me that both of these statements are simultaneously true:

1. Panther is unworthy.

2. Star is.

The difference is that Star and Vice both have standard Oscar bait trappings. Panther is just a superhero movie that’s loaded with racial baggage. The Academy is terrified of irrelevance, so of course they threw it a bone.

Also, none of these movies are “deserving” anyway. Nobody actually takes the Oscars seriously, do they?

Oh, I’m aware of the cinematic conservatism that influences these decisions.

While we’re here, I also don’t understand why Brad Cooper made a movie about a Nickleback-like singer who meets a more talented woman and then kills himself, but it’s not a comedy.

I’m indifferent to the Oscars. Its the response I can’t make sense of.

But that's exactly the point. Given what the thing is, it seems it seems bizarre to claim that a piece of pop art that captured imaginations and moved people and tapped into something meaningful in its moment should be dismissed as laughable or illegitimate.
