I think Jake Johnson and I would be best friends.

I almost never goes to those TCM Fathom Events screenings because it's hard for me to get excited about old movies projected digitally, but lately I've been thinking about how overwhelming seeing Suspiria in a theater (twice!) was, and I'm craving more of that. Granted, those were 35mm showings, but still. I see there are showings of Gone with the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia, and Alien coming up this year, and I can't decide if it's worth spending $25 for my wife and me to go. Hmm. Come to think of it, I was pretty underwhelmed when I saw 2001 in IMAX recently; 2K digital projection just wasn't sufficient for that spectacle.

Decisions, decisions...

Just looked up some technical details about how those events are screened. Nope. Nope nope nope. No way am I watching films as visually magnificent as those with the kind of tech they're using. Pass.

Yeah, I definitely think it's a vastly overrated film. But it's not his worst.

I still need to see Jackie Brown.

Yeah, I definitely think it's a vastly overrated film. But it's not his worst.

I just find the precious dialog really unbearable these days. Granted he does that in all of his movies, but I found it extreme when I revisited this one recently. The movie feels in love with itself in an insufferable way.

Also, the whole white-guy-who-loves-to-say-the-N-word thing was very noticeable in a gross way this time around. Like, that word is the go-to for any black person in a way that feels totally removed from the situation happening in the movie.

Jackie Brown is awesome.

Yes. I've said this before, but I think a huge part of what makes it so good is that it's the only time QT was adapting source material. His "QTness" is dialed back considerably, and he's allowed to simply direct a movie (that happens to have great characters played by a great cast). It feels compassionate and human in ways he usually doesn't. He's a good director; I wish he didn't have to write everything he directs.
