Anyway, SoCal isn't a city, and the Eagles and RHCP were presented as examples of "good" bands, so I don't know why we're even still talking about this.

The SoCal music "scene" is pretty shitty but i don't think you can deny that a large percentage of largely influential US bands were born in LA area. The list is enormous

The original question stipulated 'best city for music', not 'city with the most music in it'. Interesting that people have said London. I generally hate the London music culture.

I don't know, they're kind of related aren't they? A city with the most options for music would certainly have to be in the running.
If we're talking independant music scenes then LA is defintly not at the top of the pack. If we're talking best place to see the most varieties of live music on any given night LA is a great answer

I guess 'your favourite' and 'the best' are two different things. But as both of those are a subjective judgment, I'd go with the first one. I'm going to go with a city that's best associated with a sound I love, rather than one that has 400 awful but famous bands associated with it.

fair enough. however, i imagine along with those 400 awful bands there are probably 400 more you love and weren't aware were based in LA though.

I can't vote for a city based on bands I've never heard of though

From a music-I-like standpoint, I'm gonna go with Montreal. There's an almost overwhelming amount of good stuff coming out of there. Toronto's pretty awesome, too.

DC has had an interesting, kinda under the radar scene. Everything from Go-Go music to Punk to Jazz has come out of DC. Bad Brains, Duke Ellington, Fugazi, Laura Burhenn among others.

re: Eagles / Chili Peppers. Each has songs I like, but I don't love either band. Blood Sugar was a pretty great album back in the day. The other alums are more spotty, but all contain some decent songs.
For the Eagles, I actually like Take It Easy and Tequila Sunrise.

Maybe in the past, but I've been to Memphis a lot recently, and it's definitely not Memphis if we're talking present-day.
