I'm so glad I got to see him perform the part, even though I believe there are better singers/actors out there who could have crushed it in that sense.
But my professional singer/actor friends just dismiss him (and me) out of hand. I get it. But that's just so not the point as far as I'm concerned. Not with this piece. Obviously, for me, it's all about the genius of the writing.
it doesn't help that literally every person in the musical is a far, far superior singer

The singing is secondary, to me. Again, it's just not the point of the piece.

La Fayette: Jorge
Hercules Mulligan: human bass
George III: Green Habit
George Washington: McP
Charles Lee: verb

I think criticizing Miranda's singing voice misses the point of his creative genius.
I, personally, didn't enjoy this, but I can certainly recognize the symbolism, style, lyricism, and artistry that makes this show groundbreaking.

... and maybe having Hamilton be a weaker singer than the rest of the cast is a purposeful choice.

This is a good perspective.
As a stage show I don't find it particularly noteworthy, but the music really is incredible.

so if the guy is nasally and pitchy he's immune from criticism for his singing because he wrote good songs? i don't get this at all. no one's criticizing the creative genius. the execution is what's at issue (this is, after all, a musical).

but this is illogical because it's not like this in every iteration, but rather just with the original cast.

Those aren't an either/or choice.
I didn't enjoy watching it b/c I had a hard time following it.
AND
I think people who say they like it are faking it.
AND
I still respect the art.

No one is saying you can't criticize his singing. You can! Look at how well you continue to do it. And as I said, you're not alone. Most everyone I know who works on Broadway has voiced very similar criticisms (at least privately).
I think it's also worth noting that Lin didn't write the best songs (in terms of singing, not rapping) for Hamilton.

You respect the art, yet think others who respect it are liars. Got it.

He did write them all. I meant he didn't write the best songs for his character (Hamilton) to sing. Because he's aware he cannot song them.

I think it's pretty shitty to accuse others if liking something -- in fact, of being incapable of liking something -- just because you didn't like it.
I think Hamilton is the greatest piece of U.S. art created in the last 25 years. Am I a liar?
