Up is a terrific record. Just fantastic.
Sure, sure. And folks will pick on you for that. But fuck 'em!stip wrote:Look, at the bare minimum they're all at least really good. It's just that I think up is really good and I think Accelerate is great.
That makes total sense to me. For you, I mean.stip wrote:Up's got a few too many dud songs for me (and even a few stick out like sore thumb on an REM record)--and in general I think this is the album where I am the least in love with Stipe's vocals.
I don't think Green is on the big boy level, though it shows flashes. I plan on getting into the post-berry stuff tonight after work.cutuphalfdead wrote:Expand that to include Green and Up.Kaius wrote:cutuphalfdead wrote:Monster is so fucking good.
The Out of Time-Automatic-Monster-Hi Fi run is about as good as it gets.

''Accelerate'' is a tremendous record--''S/T'' is a credible comparison in terms of the role it was intended to play in the band's career but ''Accelerate'' is just so much better, nimble and effortless where ''S/T'' mostly just feels cumbersome and forced. It's like ''Reckoning'' and ''Life's Rich Pageant'' only with twenty more years of songwriting experience and band communication behind it, and after ''Live at the Olympia'' it's clear how much study of that old music went into it. A spring-loaded burst of energy, and top-shelf REM in my opinion.stip wrote:Up's got a few too many dud songs for me (and even a few stick out like sore thumb on an REM record)--and in general I think this is the album where I am the least in love with Stipe's vocals.
Accelerate may benefit from an S/T style bump for me where it is an aggressive and energetic record I wasn't sure they still had in them. But it's also such a sharp quick angular listen, and almost every song is really good.
Plus I'm Gonna DJ has one of my favorite bass parts ever.
Green might be better than Out Of Time, and I love Out Of Time.Kaius wrote:No, fuck you!cutuphalfdead wrote:Green is absolutely on the big boy level.Kaius wrote:I don't think Green is on the big boy level, though it shows flashes. But seriously ... I'm usually not wrong about these things.
