I'll have my own safe dad-rock selections but I feel like I don't even have a frame of reference for how a band like War on Drugs is meant to be really good.
I don't get it.

I don't feel like aggression in music is necessarily something I strongly relate to either, though.
I don't see that guy as being angry, he's just feeling the transcendental power of rock n' roll.

I can't recall off the top of my head if there's been anything this year that really hit me in terms of ambient music. I'm much more fond of things that are simple, pure and meditative than I am things that are fuzzy, deconstructed and glitchy, I don't stumble on much of the former in contemporary ambient (though admittedly I haven't been searching very thoroughly).
I'm still continually being exciting about records I've never heard before, it's just a lot more likely that it's something from 1965 or 1974 (or whenever) than 2014.
I've probably listened to more Mahavishnu Orchestra than anything else this year.

Sounds like you might like a band called War on Drugs, actually.
I can't do a best of year list with music. most of my music comes from searching randomly through Spotify and Youtube, and then mining an artist's catalog for a few weeks. I don't pay attention to the year. I probably dont listen to enough music to catch up.
so:
5. Videogame/synthwave guy
4. Stoner Rock Band
3. Lost in the Dream
2. some producer guy making an album
1. Post Rock Band

It's been on my radar at some point but I can't remember if I actually listened to any of it or not, I might give it a shot later.

Just had a first listen through Chuck Prophet's Night Surfer. He reminds me a lot of a younger, less brash Mick Jagger.
Not a bad album for a first run through.
