2/4/17: Kristen Stewart w/ Alessia Cara

Cold Open: Steve Bannon as the Grim Reaper is a welcome return, and "...your reef is failing, prepare to go to war" was a funny line. Angela Merkel pleading for her "sweet Barack" made me guffaw. The "Mein Kampf" joke was good, and "...your wall failed, prepare to go to war" was funny too. Keenan's turn as the President of Zimbabwe was terrific. Did SNL just deliver a really funny political cold open?! I'm mildly shocked.

Monologue: I hate Kristen Stewart, but damn, she has become sort of a looker. She's got a great balance of ease and charisma on stage right now. Aidy Bryant's "I have sex once a week on Sundays, right before dinner" got a belly laugh out of me. Kristen's f-bomb slip was funny, she recovered really well. Strong start to this episode.

U.S. Customs Orientation Video: I loved this. I think I laughed more at this than any sketch this season. The first two bits set me up, so that helped. But I so thoroughly enjoyed the raw and aggressive vibe of this.

Dry Fridays: This wasn't very funny, but Kristen Stewart was somehow still magnetic (and she brings enough energy to keep up with Kyle Mooney and Cecily Strong). 20 minutes into the show, and I think I'm becoming a Kristen Stewart fan.

Totino's Pizza Rolls: This was excellent. This episode is killing it. Kristen Stewart is beautiful and amazing. What the fuck is happening to my world?

Sean Spicer: OMG, Melissa McCarthy as Sean Spicer is AWESOME. Like a million times better than Baldwin as Trump. I hope she comes back many times for this role! Loved when she slugs a full container of gum -- this is the sort of physical comedy the show is sorely lacking on a regular basis. "Everyone was SMILING. Everyone was HAPPY. All of the men had ERECTIONS. Every single one of the women were ovulating left and right, and no one was SAD." Ha! "What, do you want me to take my nuts out so you can get a better kick at 'em?" Ha ha! They even manage to fit in a visual poop gag, and follow it up with "radical Moose Lambs." Killer stuff -- one of the best skits in a couple years, political or otherwise.

Alessia Cara #1: Holy cow, did Kristen look great in that dress! Ms. Cara has a good and interesting voice, but this song sucks hard.

Weekend Update: The opening joke about executive orders was way too long and meandering -- not the best choice for an opening joke. Che's joke about having sex with white women was nice and dark. The bulk of the Trump jokes are a weak mix of obvious observations that are a week late, and a couple punchlines that aren't very good. I like Keenan, but I'm tired of his David Ortiz routine. "...the study was published by hungry wolves" made me chuckle. This wasn't a bad Update, but the comedy ratcheted down several notches from the fantastic start of the show.

Family Feud: I love Keenan's Steve Harvey -- he almost plays him like he's mentally handicapped. All the other impressions range from good-to-great, but Keenan steals the show. "Show me gulashes and capers!" was maybe my favorite line. This skit is just dumb, simple fun. And fucking hell, Kristen Stewart's legs.

Meet Cute: Bobby Moynihan as the flamboyant hairdresser was just two magnificent seconds of television. "It's not 'Manhadden'?" made me belly laugh. Not a hysterical sketch, but really well-conceived and sweet.

Alessia Cara #2: Ugh, this woman is killing my vibe tonight.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory: Kristen Stewart is terrific as Charlie Bucket -- like, not in a skit sense, but in the sense that if this were an actual film, I could buy her as a young boy. Kate McKinnon's faces as she's reacting to the golden ticket are awesome. "Iiiii never thought you could walk, Grampa..." was really good. Not a great skit, but the energy of the episode pushed it into fun territory.

Wow, what an episode! The energy was palpable, even when the writing wasn't up to snuff (which is mostly was).

Kristen Stewart is a star. She displays grace, poise, charisma, diction, ease, edginess, and beauty all in the same moments. I became a huge, huge fan of hers tonight.

Melissa McCarthy as Sean Spicer is perhaps one of the funniest things I've ever seen on SNL.

Customs Video, Totino's Pizza Rolls, or Meet Cute would all vie for best skit on any other night, and here they're part of the same show. Interesting that they are all pre-taped segments; I wonder if Julio Torres is behind any of these?

The less-inspired skits were still a ball, thanks to the energy everyone brought.

Alessia Cara is a bore. Her voice sounds like Lorde, and the music is derivative of every mid-tempo pop hit from the last five years.

I feel like that's a relatively recent development for Pattinson, and only because he really pushed himself to take indie roles and spurned big studio productions--it seems like only in the last few years after doing shit like Good Time and The Lighthouse could you get away with saying that RobPat is a legitimately good actor. But I certainly think sexism played a role in Stewart's reputation, because she's been killing it for a while now. She was so good in Personal Shopper. I think they're both fantastic.

I dunno, Good Time was pretty stunning. I'd put it on par with Spencer.
