I can understand that criticism for Only God Forgives, maybe. But certainly not Drive. It's stylized but it has a ton of heart. Mostly thanks to the geniuses Gosling and Mulligan.

I've only seen Drive and Only God Forgives. Didn't love either of them. Drive has some things going for it (again, mainly cast) but it has a lot of problems, too. Only God Forgives is ... not good.

I try to be open minded and generous about Drive because there are things I do like about it. But it's a tough watch. And not just because of the unnecessary hyper-violence.

It's a pretty poorly paced movie with flat, uninspired visuals and a terrible pace. And then there's the aforementioned hyper-violence. The soundtrack gets way more credit than it deserves, though it's not terrible, and the film all but totally wastes the talents it employs. Ryan Gosling fights like a brave fight but without his performance it's more of a good idea than a successful movie.
