I haven't been around here for a while, but today felt like a day I needed to check in. I woke up to the news on the radio and I just can't believe it. After Eddie, Chris was my go-to front man. The last time I saw him performing solo was just an amazing experience. The guy was still in top shape.

While his death is truly sad for those close to him, it's also hard to take as a fan of the grunge era, who was greatly influenced by these bands as a teenager in the 90's. When I think of the bands that really made me fall in love with music, many of those artists have passed away. Who would've thought that Axl Rose would still be touring with the original GnR lineup while Chris Cornell is dead at 52!?

While the members of Soundgarden must be crushed, I'm also thinking alot of Eddie and how he's handling this. He had to live with the survivor guilt of Kurt's suicide, but had Chris along side him as the last men standing. And if it was suicide, I would bet there would be a lot of mixed emotions and anger.

Good god this is just terrible news.

Was shocked and saddened by this news when I heard it first thing this morning. Now that signs seem to point to suicide I'm oddly even more crushed. We just lost another one of the greats, and another musical icon from my youth. RIP Chris.

A few choice quotes from Cornell:

"Nothing seems to kill me, no matter how hard I try"

"Died just like suicide"

"Fear is strong and love's for everyone who isn't me, so kill your health and kill yourself"

"Pretty noose is pretty pain, and I don't like what you got me hanging from"

Goddamn, that shit seems real fucking dark in retrospect now.

There isn't an expletive strong enough for this.

Those aren't quotes, they're lyrics. Quit stirring the pot.

Those are lyrics he wrote over twenty years ago when he was a much younger man.

I doubt they provide much insight into his frame of mind as a 52 year old husband and father of three.

The last song they played last night was Slaves and Bulldozers merged with In my Time of Dying. Makes it even more haunting.

RIP.

Come on Jammer, I'm pretty sure you are smart enough to know the difference between lyrics and quotes.

Yeah, but at the same time, they used to close with that song and that tag.

Lyrics can be quotes though

I'm still processing this. He is the Godfather of the Seattle scene as far as I'm concerned. Kurt was from Aberdeen, Staley was a suburbanite, Ed the transplant. Cornell was the true Seattlite and the scene started with him. First band with a Subpop release, first band in the scene on a major label. They were one of the main bands that inspired Nirvana. And, they were the band that pushed the boundaries more than anyone else. As far as Pearl Jam is concerned, he could have EASILY created an antagonistic situation with Ed coming in. He lost his buddy Andy Wood, he could have fucked the whole scene up out of anger and spite, and moreso screwed up the launch of Mookie Blaylockl/Pearl Jam. He was at the first Off Ramp gig. He welcomed Ed in. He's practically a founding member of the band. Can you imagine Pearl Jam without the existence of Chris Cornell? I can't. Jeez.

PLUS, he had an interesting solo career and he was still going strong. He was the spiritual leader of Seattle rock, not the other guys as much. What a bummer.

So eerie, the last two nights, cause of the Singles soundtrack promotion, I've been watching old Soundgarden youtube videos. The other night, I watched the Birth Ritual footage and the last night, the last thing I did before going to bed, I was watching PRETTY NOOSE. And I wake up to this? What the fuck?

His last tweet was really odd, looking back now. #stopthebullshit was part of it. My best friend's Mother killed herself and the day before, we hadn't seen her that happy in along time. The next day, we got the call while I was at work. Initially, I'd hoped this was a joke, then I thought OD.

I'm not one to get overly sad about celebrity deaths, but this one is sad, confusing and shocking.

Just looking at the pointless deaths of our Generations' artists is even more confusing and shitty. Kurt, Layne, Shannon Hoon, etc.. Fuck this shit.

Not to be obscene, but could this be an INXS-type thing? The man has been speaking with enthusiasm about future projects and possibilities a lot lately.

People are referencing INXS/Hutchence, wasn't that quite clearly a suicide? I don't know much about it

I don't mean to sound morbid or weird, but I hope that's what it was and not suicide. Chris just seemed so much more chill the last few years. I know that he'd struggled with alcoholism, but he seemed like he was in a good place. Oh ,and it wasn't #stopthebullshit, it was #nomorebullshit, I think.

Reports were he accidentally asphyxiated himself while masturbating.

It's not celebrities dying I care much about, but artists. To me, artists reveal and enlighten us. A celebrity just reaps fame and fortune. He was a celebrity, but he was moreso an artist. So, I am bummed. This sucks, I wish his family well.
