I like to sit as close as humanly possible but there are occasionally some truly evil cinemas that will put seats basically underneath the screen. It's cruel and unusual. But I haven't figured out the right way to ask staff what the closest seat with a good view is. Their perspective on what close means seems to differ from mine, and they recommend seats way too far back. I want no one in front of me and as much of my field of vision to be taken up by screen, without distortion, as possible
psychopathic.
You like to sit far back so the screen begins to resemble a forty inch television and you get to watch morons eat their popcorn?
in the back and on the corner so I can get out quickly if anything goes wrong.

I enjoy the thrill of taking my life in my hands. Is someone sneaking up behind me with a garrote?

Maybe!

Team Argo. I love to be up close. For me, at my local theater (the screens aren't super huge), that usually means the fifth or sixth row from the front. My girlfriend hates it

It's easier to have sex in the back.

Bring back open seating!
I'm running into this with Antman. My kid has a two day wrestling meet the weekend that it comes out. If he's eliminated on Friday, he'll be free Saturday to go to the movie, but we won't know that until late Friday, at which point there will only be shitty seats available. Reserved seating ruins the freedom to choose to see a movie on the spur of the moment.

If I plan my movies two weeks in advance, I'm good. If I decided, "I'd like to go see a movie tonight," I'm fucked.

What theater chain do you go to? We have an AMC here and our theater doesn’t have assigned seating.

We had an AMC in town that didn't, but that closed. There's also a small one downtown that doesn't have it, but that theater has a big stain in the middle of one of the screens.

There's a independent theater in town that does have reserved seating, and a Silverspot, which does as well. That's the one I hate because I can't see the theater ahead of time. They've got 2 or 3 differently sized theaters, and where you sit makes a difference.

That's what I've got within 15 minutes of my house.

I feel like something that isn't seriously dealt with in film (but IS in other artforms) is Minimalism; I don't mean "subtlety", I mean literal stripping-back to bare bones essentials of the communication of an idea

then a movie like Skinamarink comes along, which does proper minimalism simply and smartly, and everyone says "yeah fine, but it should be shorter", when if it *were* shorter, it would no longer be minimalist; because minimalism requires a whole lot of breathing space between its "events" to actually work; minimalism is boring to those who aren't into it, or it's not minimalism; if the ideas are more compact, jumbled or complex, it might become more entertaining, but it is no longer minimalism

in this essay, I DID...

more minimalist cinema than Skinamarink:

Arnulf Rainer (Peter Kubelka, 1960)
The Flicker (Tony Conrad, 1966)

if that's too minimalist, then:

Serene Velocity (Ernie Gehr, 1970)

but if you really do need something to chew on, then I guess:

Wavelength (Michael Snow, 1967)

No matter the size of a theater, the only place I WANT to sit is the last row. Preferably on an aisle, but center is fine too.

The kind that's about to save a lot of money at AMC, apparently.

If I was in a partially full theatre and there was a guy in the very back corner, I would have to assume he was jackin' it.

Middle near the front is the correct location.
