Get your crusty ass out of the trenches of that culture war and find something you actually enjoy. It's not that difficult.

Miserable cunt.

I don't think it's really too revolutionary of a concept to think to oneself: "the popular things that people are talking about at work look crappy. I feel so alone". I mean, the guy cited BCS as the last great thing.. That was like six months ago. He isn't talking about Cary Grant or John Cassavetes. The guy was basically saying "there wasn't any good TV this winter and I'm not a child so the Disney+ stuff doesn't appeal to me. I hate my job and the people I work with". Not really a great tweet, tbh. Or reddit post or whatever it was

You should care about culture! Why are you so defeated? Your whole culture was given to you by Hollywood! Why wouldn't you care about what the world's dominant culture producer is making?

Anyway culture wars is only a part of it. For the most part its corporate interference, design by committee, and decline talent and skills. And tech. Probably a lot of competition from other mediums as well. And maybe worse audiences. And plain old timing.

It's a very interesting topic, you philistine! Be interested!

there is no possible way to quantify "worse" audiences.

and the "dominant" cultural producer has been doing the same thing since its inception. trying to rub two pennies together and turn them into three. sometimes there will be a coincidence of the capacity for profit & art. often not. the world abounds in cultural detritus of all kinds. you should take sailor's advice.

that said, culture is interesting, but nostalgia for a recent past that isn't materially different than our present is a category error

I think it's somewhat different now, but the change has been very gradual. Sure, it was always about making money, but I think the old movie moguls also liked the prestige and Hollywood lifestyle as well. There was a culture that they were immersed in. I can't see the CEO of Viacom giving a remote shit about any of that.

I can't believe that anyone seriously thinks Hollywood's output as a whole has been steady in terms of quality over the decades. There are obviously shifts over time. The only question is whether things shift back or not.

But closing myself off completely from new art because I'm convinced it can't be as good as the stuff I already know and love... I don't want that. That sounds bad. I want nothing to do with it. I already know it's going to be dogshit. OH NO
on the other hand, it's not unreasonable or necessarily bad to be discriminating about what one spends one's time on, particularly if the object in question seems to run counter to one's tastes. that's not an argument for closing off one's self from new art. just to say that there is a certain amount of recycling going on all the time in culture, particularly in a culture that moves as quickly as ours, and i think viewers are adept at figuring out what it is they're going to see from a sample of some kind. that's not always the case, and that's why it's crucial to remain open.

the westerns and noirs that we get hard for now were not prestigious then. noah cross is instructive here re prestige (respectability) and its application to old hollywood

Bring back open seating!
I'm running into this with Antman. My kid has a two day wrestling meet the weekend that it comes out. If he's eliminated on Friday, he'll be free Saturday to go to the movie, but we won't know that until late Friday, at which point there will only be shitty seats available. Reserved seating ruins the freedom to choose to see a movie on the spur of the moment.

If I plan my movies two weeks in advance, I'm good. If I decided, "I'd like to go see a movie tonight," I'm fucked.

Old news, but yeah that's fucked. I don't like tiered pricing. I do like reserved seating. I go see movies on the spur of the moment all the time.

I will admit that this has not actually, IN PRACTICE, prevented me from going to a movie, but I still dislike the concept.

I don't REALLY care about the Academy Awards. But if All Quite... really wins best picture over these other options I'm probably gonna be really angry.

The only potential upset I could imagine is Banshees taking it but I find it very unlikely

EEAAO isn't my favorite movie of the year (or of the pictures nominated) but I goddamn hope you're right.
