So, a new 4K UHD release of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is coming out for the 50th Anniversary...

First: good god fifty years
Second: Do I want to see a gritty, dusty film such as this 'really' cleaned up

My plan for tomorrow evening was to sit-back and watch the 4K77no-DNR version of Star Wars. I could be off-base but I have found these ultra-remasters of (the few) films I have seen make for odd results.

I don't watch much of anything anymore but this particular announcement struck me.

Might be the definitive Meryl Streep performance

I just watched the new Mad Max trailer (heard this week from a friend that there's a new Mad Max coming) and wasn't really impressed. Definitely not a fan of how it looks, I mean this is like those corny airbrush paintings you see on trucks:

Is the new release of Chainsaw really “cleaning” the image ?

me and Julian watched TMNT: Mutant Mayhem for my birthday (I'd seen it a bunch, he hadn't) and I still can't stop thinking about how funny "RAY FILLEeeeEEEeeeEEET" is

I'm watching Miami Vice on Blu-ray and it looks terrible. I looked up some reviews and they all say that the Blu-ray is faithful to Mann's vision. I just don't understand what happened. The amount of noise in some shots (especially night shots) is staggering.

The movie is pretty good so far, it's just disappointing how bad it looks.

Steve Albini wrote:Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

I actually love how it looks. It fits the movie perfectly.

It improved as the movie went on. The first 20 minutes or so were very heavy on night scenes which were the worst offenders.

Miami vice is a masterpiece and looks amazing. Part of the appeal of the movie is that very digital look in the city.

Mann got two great ones with this one and Collateral but got it wrong with Public Enemies, we’re the digital look hurt the period piece.

I rewatched PE a couple months ago and liked it WAY more this time around. I think the first half is stronger than the second half though.
I might do a rewatch too

I think on my first viewing I was thinking "John Dillinger, it'll be action packed!" Which of course it isn't. Much more of a character study, and the action sequences felt more loaded the second time around because of that.

I just think he doesn't really get the romance right.
I saw it when it came out at the theatre and was very thrown off by the digital photography.

Maybe this time I can see other stuff too
