"Alive" is a song that I recognize as very important for the band, as very powerful and moving for its listeners, and as completely deserving of all the attention it has received. I love Stone's main riff. Whenever I've seen them play, the crowd has gone bananas as soon as he starts playing it.

I don't often enjoy those big communal moments at Pearl Jam shows but that's one that stands out as being worthwhile. I'm a lot more sympathetic towards people expressing genuine and spontaneous glee at hearing the one Pearl Jam song they know than I am towards superfans yelling and gesturing at the expected moments as though they're attending a showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show (see: the Small Town "hello", fist-pumping during the outro to Alive, etc.)

Oh, I also hate the chorused acoustic guitar during the intro on the album version. Rick Parasher's (rawer) pre-Ten promo single mix is miles better than what ended up on the album in that regard (it has a different guitar solo too).

Good point.

I agree that the eruption of cheers that happens when that opening riff of "Alive" is played is quite possibly the most genuine, to use your term, "communal" experience at a Pearl Jam show... 2nd only to the mass exodus to the bathrooms during Even Flow.

You can't force a reaction from a crowd like that. (The Fixer, I'm glaring at you as I say that)
