that ed should attend because chris gave him his big break makes no sense; ed was already in what would become pearl jam when he sang on those totd songs. i think it's pretty clear that they weren't super close, big deal. they weren't tight, but they weren't feuding either - just two dudes who had mutual acquaintances.

that being said, there seemed to be mutual respect between the two, so it is kind of weird for ed to skip his funeral.

It's pretty obvious he was under the influence of something before his bodyguard gave him the two Ativan, which happened around 11:30. He was already slurring his speech 5 minutes later when he spoke to his wife on the phone. From what I've read, Ativan takes 20-60 minutes to start working. So Chris was doped up before the Ativan could even take effect. By the time the Ativan really kicked in, who knows where he was mentally.

Now we're hearing news (TMZ that is) about fresh track marks, and his house engineer claims Chris was high and fucked up during the show.

I watched a decent amount of video that's been posted of the Detroit concert. He's just doesn't look right. I saw him stagger a few times and appear disoriented. His performance and timing was a bit of a rollercoaster. I posted a video a while back on this very topic, but here's another that just hits me every time I see the look in his eyes:



I don't believe a sober Chris would do himself in. I think he suffered some side effects that night, either from a combination of interacting drugs or a high dosage of Ativan. Of course we'll know more when the toxicology results are released. Chris might have been dealing with a drug-induced reality and intensified thoughts he would not normally have. I really do wonder how much of keenly self-aware Chris was present when these thoughts became an action to end his life. By themselves, drugs aren't going to put a razor to your wrist, but certainly they can help facilitate suicidal behavior by altering your state and impairing judgment. I've known a handful of people that have used anti-anxiety and anti-depressant drugs, and it can change you as a person.

Bottom line, Chris should have never been on this drug due to his past history of addiction and alcohol abuse!

People speak of his past depression and struggles, but Chris was a much different person after finding sobriety. From a distance, he seemed happy and clean for a very long time. Everything he mentioned about music, friends, and family pointed towards the future. Unfortunately, it's sounding like Chris' was medicating himself. Maybe it wasn't that noticeable before. Maybe it was only when he was on the road. Maybe the night of his death he ingested a dangerous cocktail of drugs and just took too much. It's certainly possible he had a sudden and severe relapse over a short period of time.

We all have dark places we can go in our head. Everyone has internal dialogue and underlying thoughts of the experiences we go through, both good and bad. Only Chris was there when he did the unthinkable. It doesn't make sense for so many reasons, and I guess it never will for most of us fans. But in that brief moment, it somehow made sense to Chris. I don't think I'll ever be convinced that the Chris Cornell in room 1136 was a true reflection of the man we've followed for so long. I'll always feel like the drugs triggered unstable emotions and distorted the normal headspace he lived in.

It's crazy how fast these events took place. From finishing Slaves & Bulldozers on stage in front of adoring fans, to gone forever in about an hour.

Not that it matters now, but why didn't the bodyguard untie the exercise band? I guess the bodyguard was not capable of administering CPR? In one article I read that the bodyguard was able to knock down the first door relatively quick, but had a more difficult time with the second. It's creepy to think Chris may have heard someone kicking in his door as he was slipping away or in the act. I can't help but think what if the bodyguard was able to break in sooner.

The whole thing makes me incredibly sad. DAMMIT, Chris, why? Such a swift and unexpected exit. No goodbye, with so many questions left behind. I still can't believe this is how it ends. Fifty-fucking-two.

I figure we'll hear from Kim every now and then regarding Soundgarden's catalog. I'm betting Matt will be the most accessible when expressing feelings over Chris' death. Kim will probably do a few written interviews where he talks about it, and we'll be lucky if we ever hear anything from Ben on the subject. Maybe years down the line when he's working on a collaboration or something.

That's a fear of mine, Ben fading away into obscurity again, and Kim doing little with his musical talent besides the occasional side-project. I hope these guys continue to make music. Maybe form another band without calling it Soundgarden. But they might think they're getting a little too old for fresh starts, and maybe it's too much of a mental obstacle to do something significant together without Chris around anymore. I just don't want them to disappear, never to be heard from again artistically. Perhaps they'll become inspired. We know Matt will continue his work with Pearl Jam, among other things.

And we'll probably get some form of the album released posthumously, maybe similar to Jeff Buckley's album Chris had worked on. This is assuming Chris recorded any vocal tracks, which is probably limited at best.

One of the things I'll miss about Chris is hearing him do interviews, his little quips and the way he reflected on life and music. Was always a joy to hear him speak.

^^Nice write-up, my sentiments exactly re the mystery behind CC's final hours. I just don't get it. Also sorry if someone else already said it but I wonder why Ben was a no show at the funeral?

It broke my heart to see kim there..he looked so sad. The same with Jerry cantrell..there is a poco of him looking at the grave. God.

Not that I know for sure, but there is a lot of evidence that ed and Chris were really close. Mutual acquaintances? I think they were much closer than that.

Maybe ed wasn't welcome, maybe he didn't want to go. Maybe he thought best to out on tour and sing in tribute to his fallen friend. I will be surprised if it isn't hanging heavy over his whole tour, and you can be sure it will be mentioned. Hopefully not by the crowd singing out for Chris songs. But by Vedder himself.
